I think she might have heard him the first time. Does Mr Thierry think this will work or does he just have to try anyway?

He knew enough about her to hire her in the first place. I think he's using this diversion to get time to beat a strategic retreat!

The article ( http://earthobservatory.nasa.gov/Features/ForestCarbon/page4.php ) says they divided the country up into 66 "mapping zones," so maybe that is them? Some of the borders look river-ish, so I'm thinking they were going with natural boundaries, maybe for the sake of convenience somehow.

Here's an alternative idea. What if Columbus took a wrong turn and ended up going in circles in the Sargasso Sea. If Native American culture proceeded uninterrupted to a comparable 21st Century technological level, then those 'zones' could be Ancestral Homelands.
