A new research paper describes the discovery of "cocoons" of gamma-ray-emitting space dust 27,000 light years long, radiating from the galactic core at about a 15 degree angle to the pole. It is thought that these are likely tell-tale light echoes of relativistic jets--plasma traveling at near light speed--shot out along incredibly powerful magnetic fields from the poles of our galaxy's central supermassive black hole, Sgr A*, the last time it was actively sucking in large quantities of material (which might have thus been about 55,000 years ago?), as seen in this artist's concept:

One scientist estimates A* might have had to have swallowed about "10,000 suns" to generate the jets!

It's a good thing to live out in the spiral boondocks!
