Tried some what turned out to be cheap gouache (I thought it was cheap watercolor :P) over ink over the weekend:

Then I went and found a 99 cent watercolor kit, which unsurprisingly turned out to be horrible (mega chalky residue and dull colors):

Maybe some day I'll actually buy a reputable watercolor set. :P

You just need to work with it more Ben, I just use cheapo watercolours but the kind you get at an art store, maybe you got the kiddies stuff at the dollar store? Mine cost $8 for a tray of 12 colours, semi-wet. Gouache is still watercolour but opaque, plain watercolour is called transparent.

Yeah, the second ones were definitely dollar store type. What brand do you use? A couple folks on the forum have recommended Winsor & Newton, they have a small set that's about $15 for 12 or so pans.

When I open the tray the brand name goes into garbage, so don't know, it's just a clear plastic case with 12 semi-moist colours but they do the job for me.
