A 1.7 mile asteroid passed about 10 or 11 Moon-distances from Earth today, which isn't that exciting, except that it had its *own* little moon, as spotted in these recent NASA radar images:

Now, they were nowhere near hitting Earth and anyway were much smaller than the one that wiped out the dinosaurs, BUT just in case, NASA, at the request of Congress in 2005, came up with a study of the best means of deflecting an incoming catastrophic asteroid or other such body, concluding--as any hack science fiction writer could have told you--that the best way to do it would be with a nuke.

Bet the dinosaurs wish they'd had nukes.
