By this past weekend I'd had three separate people tell me I color like '80s comics. This was a bit of a shock at first, especially when I realized they were right! I mean I hadn't been doing it consciously, but the '80s was when I started reading comics, and I guess those old dyes and color charts rubbed off on me. : P Did you know that, pre-Photoshop, Marvel colorists had 125 colors to choose from, while at DC they only had 64 colors? I only just found that out over the weekend (from an excellent article on the old coloring systems by excellent modern colorist Matt Hollingsworth), but maybe it helps explain why I was always drawn to Marvel's comics more than DC's?

Anyway here's some coloring practice I did over the weekend, over a quick fantasy sketch from my sketchbook:

And here's the colors for today's page as I picked them and laid them down, before the final step that processes them with Hard Light (x2) and then Levels gamma adjustment (.75):

And here's an alternate palette I came up with at the end when I was worrying that today's palette didn't match yesterday's closely enough, even though they show the same location:

but then I remembered that I'd promised myself to free myself up by not worrying about that sort of thing. : P

You can count on short attention spans.
And the ones who do notice are too polite to mention it!
