"Brain-inspired chip fits 1m 'neurons' on postage stamp" says the BBC. The article describes a different type of computer, whose integrated memory/processor operates something like the human brain, using a scalable network of "neuron" computational units bundled in "neurosynaptic cores" to tackle computing problems. Each of these "neurons" connects to 256 others, in theory allowing this type of computer to be better at certain computational tasks, like image recognition, than traditional computers, whose processing pipeline is not so interconnected. The current "TrueNorth" prototype chip isn't powerful enough to be practical, yet, but of course the scientists involved are optimistic that it can get there some day.
