The largest optical refracting telescope ever: The Great Paris Exhibition Telescope of 1900! At nearly 200 feet (60 meters) long, with a 1.25 meter lens, it was so big it could only lay on its side, with light from the heavens reflected into it by a 2-meter pivoting mirror.

For science experiments it was not very useful, but for impressing people at the exhibition with the sheer size and scope of SCIENCE, it was pretty good.

Nobody wanted to buy it after the exhibition, so it was just broken up for scrap.

The real reason it's on it's side is Dude wasn't using it to observe the heavenly bodies above, he was focusing on the heavenly bodies of the girls dorm windows.
