In 1934, Texan aviator Wiley Post, with the help of the B.F. Goodrich Company, helped develop the first pressure suit, to help him set the altitude record (he got up to 50,000 feet, and some credit him with discovering the jet stream). Post had an eyepatch, having lost his left eye in an oil field accident at age 27, and was kind of a bad-ass in his crazy rubber suit:

Post and his good buddy Will Rogers died the next year while on a mission to survey a US-to-Russia air mail route through Alaska--the airplane Post had made himself out of parts from two different aircraft crashed after takeoff from an Alaskan lagoon where they had stopped to ask for directions in bad weather.

Post's pressure suit and record-setting plane "Winnie Mae" (oh, I forgot to mention that he set the round-the-world flight speed record in it--twice) are now in the Smithsonian.
