A hypernova is the explosion of a star from 100 to 300 times the size of our Sun. Here's one, SN 2006gy, seen in X-rays in 2006 from 238 million light years away: it's the blob in the upper right, and the blob in the lower left is the core of its home galaxy:

So that single star as a hypernova was nearly as bright in X-rays as the entire core of its galaxy!
