8,000 light years away and 85 light years across, supernova remnant RCW 86

is left over from the first recorded supernova in human history: Chinese observers in 185 AD noted the "guest star" that stayed visible in the sky for eight months.

The data collected for this new multi-wavelength image (X-ray in blue and green, infrared in yellow and red) helped modern scientists determine that the supernova was caused by a white dwarf star that reached its mass limit by accretion of mass from a neighboring star; also, that prior to the supernova, it emitted a strong solar wind that blew a bubble in the surrounding interstellar medium; when material from the eventual supernova explosion rushed outward through this low-density cavity, it was able to travel faster than it would have through the usual interstellar medium (which is thicker, with more dust and other particles in it); this helps explain RCW 86's unusually large rate of expansion.

Getting suggestive, she is! 0_o

You're more informative than an episode of Nova: Science Now, Ben. ;)

She's standing in a doorway, that's what! =o

Man I was so out of it when I posted this last night that I managed to screw up the code for the image, AND neglect to check it in the finished post. Baaad. =P
